Slovakia vs Sweden

Our prediction for this Nations League match:

Slovakia and Sweden square off against each other at Tehelne pole in what is expected to be a close Nations League encounter. The Slovaks aim to keep their 100% record intact, but they will have a big fish to fry against Sweden. A man to keep an eye on in the home team will be Stanislav Lobotka, who produced a fine display for Napoli in a 3-1 win over Como at the weekend.

The Swedes, on the other hand, aim to build on back-to-back wins over Azerbaijan and Estonia. However, we are not tempted to put our money on the away team this time out as Newcastle United ace Alexander Isak misses out with injury. In his absence, a man to watch in the away team will be Sporting CP ace Viktor Gyokeres, who scored a brace in the 3-0 win over Estonia in September. Tottenham forward Dejan Kulusevski should start as well.

How the bookies view it: Almost couldn’t be closer

The odds for this fixture are almost perfectly in the middle, with neither side getting favoured by the bookmakers. Bingoplus gave Slovakia a slight edge with 29/19 as opposed to 16/9 for Sweden. The draw sits at 12/5.

Recent head to head: Can Slovakia break the curse?

Slovakia and Sweden have met seven times in the last 25 years and the results have been straightforward. Slovakia remain winless against this opponent, losing three times and drawing four. Interestingly, there was a draw each time Sweden travelled to Bratislava. The most recent encounter happened during the previous Euro in 2021 and Sweden won 1-0 (PHMACAO).

Slovakia vs Sweden Prediction

Both Slovakia and Sweden had a winning start to this Nations League campaign. Both teams have won the opening two matches and Sweden is currently holding the top spot of group 1 followed by Slovakia.

Slovakia will be the host for Thursday’s clash and the team defeated Azerbaijan and Estonia keeping a clean sheet. They netted 3 goals in that process too.

Meanwhile, Sweden bagged two motivating wins at the start of the season. They defeated Estonia and Azerbaijan scoring 3 apiece. However, they failed to keep a clean sheet against Azerbaijan, which was an away match.

Moving on, Sweden can also rely on the head-to-head tradition as they have a 100% unbeaten record against Slovakia. However, the two meeting between them with Slovakia having the hosting advantage ended in a goalless draw. Do also note that their last meeting at this venue was in a 2013 friendly. By the looks of things, we expect a tight encounter between these two in-form teams at Tehelne Pole on Thursday.

The home form of Slovakia looks decent enough. They were unbeaten in four of the last five home outings. On the other hand, Sweden had some highly competitive away games on the road of late and has still managed to bag three unbeaten games in the past six.

Also, Sweden will enter this match following a 1-3 win against Azerbaijan against Slovakia’s latest home win, being a 2-0 victory against the same Azerbaijan side. Since both teams have an impressive competency, we expect a highly entertaining match-up here.

However, Sweden have an upper hand in all the above mentioned stats and we like to back the draw no bet tip in favor of them mainly because of the h2h recordings. Moreover, the past five away matches of Sweden saw their defensive line breaching. Thus, the both teams to score tip seems to be an ideal tip to back here.

Players to watch: Тhe next Ibrahimovich?

It is shocking how Viktor Gyokeres remains in Sporting after his unbelievable season last year. The striker nailed 40 goals for his club across all competitions and this new campaign promises to be even more impressive.

The Swede has already scored 13 goals for Sporting this season and also featured in five of Sweden’s six Nations League goals to date. He scored twice against Estonia, once against Azerbaijan, and provided two assists.

With Alexander Isak out for this match, Gyokeres will be the target of all passes and we expect him to score again.

Probable line-ups:

Slovakia: Dubravka, Hancko, Obert, Skriniar, Gyomber, Duda, Lobotka, Benes, Suslov, Strelec, Haraslin

Sweden: Johansson, Gudmundsson, Hien, Douglas, Sema, Saletros, Ayari, Eliasson, Kulusevski, Elanga, Gyokeres
